The news tab shows headlines from RSS feeds you choose. The app links to the publisher; no article body is copied.

01How news works

  • The backend reads the feeds (firebase/functions/src/api/news.ts). It understands RSS 2.0, RSS 1.0 and Atom.
  • Only the headline, the link, the date, a plain-text summary of at most 280 characters and the feed's image URL are kept. Tapping a headline opens the publisher's page. No article bodies are copied.
  • Headlines are tagged with coins: a top-250 coin is tagged when its name, or its symbol (as a whole word, 3 or more capital letters), appears in the title or summary. The coin screen shows the news tagged with that coin.
  • The scheduled job refreshNews runs every 15 minutes. Headlines are kept for 7 days by default; older ones are deleted.

Publishers' terms apply

These feeds are public, but each publisher sets its own terms for using its feed, headlines and images, especially in a commercial app. Check them, and remove any feed you are not allowed to use. The publishers' names and content belong to them.

An invalid line is skipped and listed on the Status page. Status also fetches every enabled feed and reports how many items it found, or why it failed. The News page shows the newest stored headlines and the last item seen per source.
